Volker März

artist

Volker März is a German visual artist. From 1977 to 1983 he studied painting at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin. In 2005 he founded the performative group UNOS UNITED. In his multimedia work, which includes painting, sculpture, video, music, and literary texts, März often uses humour and irony to reflect on ethical, historical, and political issues. He is known for his complex spatial installations consisting of hundreds of clay statuettes, which often take the form of famous figures (Friedrich Nietzsche, Hanna Arendt, Walter Benjamin, or Franz Kafka). The artist conducts imaginary dialogues with these statuettes or removes them from their pedestals. März’s work, which often references the tension between post-war memory, personal history, and political taboos, has been exhibited in many European countries, including the Czech Republic, where it was presented in a solo exhibition at DOX in 2014. He lives and works in Berlin.
