Cartografia Sonora Imaginária
Companhia de Música Teatral
Join us for an unforgettable evening with Cartografia Sonora Imaginária, a musical theatre performance that invites the viewer/listener to “imaginary places” where music and image merge in a discourse of ideas, memories, reminiscences, and reverberations.
Two performers working in a simple yet unconventional creative laboratory explore the concepts of landscape and soundscape, inviting the audience to embark on an abstract, wandering journey through “clouds of sound” and “forests of images”.
The performance was developed by the acclaimed Companhia de Música Teatral specifically for DOX’s exhibition Argus & Medusa: On Hope in Dark Times, in which contemporary artists have reinterpreted Théodore Géricault’s iconic painting The Raft of the Medusa (1816–1819). The performance reverberates with the wailing call for hope, compassion, and humanity that issues from the painting, the entire exhibition, and the FALL festival.
Géricault’s painting is full of imaginary sounds, as are the works of the artists whom the painting has inspired. In this performance they enter into dialogue with other sounds and images that reflect both the darkness of our times and, above all, the moment of hope that Géricault decided to capture in his painting – that same hope that Václav Havel saw as a “state of mind”, an imaginary landscape that transcends the immediate experience of the real world.

Companhia de Música Teatral (CMT) is a Portuguese ensemble that has been exploring the intersections of music and other artistic languages for more than twenty-five years, creating comprehensive and versatile artistic experiences. CMT’s “artistic-educational constellations” arise from their exploration of the relationships between art and education, in which they interconnect academic and artistic research, training, and community involvement, promoting the experience of art as a tool for social and human development. CMT’s repertoire is a kaleidoscope of performances, installations, workshops, medium- and long-term projects, training activities, publications in various formats, participation in research projects, and presentations that have a national and international scope.
