Jemimah Steinfeld

Jemimah Steinfeld is a British journalist, author, and editor-in-chief of the quarterly Index on Censorship. Since April 2024 she has also been the CEO of the organisation of the same name. Since its founding in 1974, Index on Censorship has aimed to document cases of writers and artists being silenced in totalitarian societies as well as in the free world. Steinfeld has long dealt with issues of censorship, gender, and freedom of expression, and her purview also includes topics related to contemporary China. She lived in Beijing and Shanghai for many years, and she is the author of Little Emperors and Material Girls: Sex and Youth in Modern China (2015), in which she explores the lives of young Chinese people. She studied history at the University of Bristol and sinology at the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies. Her articles have been published in The Guardian, The Telegraph, The Independent, The Times, The New Statesman, and on CNN. She regularly speaks at international events dedicated to freedom of speech.
