Jan Vytiska
artist
Jan Vytiska is an artist and musician. He is one of the most distinctive painters of his generation. He studied new media at the University of Ostrava before switching to painting. His works combine Wallachian folklore, apocalypticism, and magical realism with elements of horror. He creates a tension between beauty and horror, between traditional motifs and pop-culture exaggeration and irony. In 2010 and 2011 Vytiska won the UniCredit Bank Young Prague Photo Award and was among the finalists for the Critics’ Prize for Young Painting, where he also received the Audience Choice Award. His most extensive exhibition, The Ritual of Cursed Hearts, took place at DOX in 2023. Vytiska has also had numerous other solo shows in the Czech Republic, and he has been represented in exhibitions in Poland, Germany, and France, among other countries. He lives and works in Prague.
